Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in the National Capital Region
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the heroes who fought and sacrificed to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).
Lincoln-Cushing Camp No. 2 serves the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area and is one of the largest camps in SUVCW.
We are involved in a number of civic and community activities in the areas of historic preservation, education, and service to our veterans including:
Preservation of grave sites and monuments honoring those who fought for the Union.
Sponsoring and participating in public events honoring our veterans, including the annual Decoration Day (Memorial Day) ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, the National Memorial Day Parade, and tributes to those who served in the armed forces.
Providing educational opportunities for young people including scholarships, programs supporting the Boy Scouts of America, and providing guest speakers for schools. For members, we have quarterly camp meetings that include presentations on Civil War history, as well as tours of local battlefields led by Civil War experts.
Please feel free to review our website and learn more about our organization, then consider joining us in preserving our Civil War heritage.
